2.80

舉：「茱萸上堂云：『爾諸人莫向虛空裏釘橛。』時有靈虛上座，出眾云：『虛空是橛。』茱萸便打，虛云：『和尚莫錯打某甲。』萸便歸方丈。」師云：「屎上加尖。」僧云：「和尚適來與麼道那。」師云：「槌鐘謝響，得箇蝦蟇出來。」

He brought up: "Zhuyu ascended the hall and said: 'None of you should drive a stake into empty space.' At that time Senior Monk Lingxu stepped forward from the assembly and said: 'Empty space is the stake.' Zhuyu struck him at once. Lingxu said: 'Upādhyāya, do not mistakenly strike me.' Zhuyu then returned to the abbot's quarters." The Master said, "Adding a point onto shit." A monk said, "Did the Upādhyāya speak like that just now?" The Master said, "Striking the bell to end the reverberation, out comes a toad!"
