因數僧來參，師問：「作什麼來？」云：「般柴來。」師云：「歸向北去，不得辜負老僧。」無對。復云：「來來，三愚共成一智作麼生？」代云：「一畆地。」代前語云：「不因一事，不長一智。」

When several monks came to greet him, the Master asked, "What have you come to do?" They said, "We have come carrying firewood." The Master said, "Returning toward the north, you must not fail this old monk." There was no answer. He said again, "Come, come! How do three fools together make up one wise man?" Answering on their behalf, he said, "One mu of land." Speaking on behalf of the earlier words, he said, "Without going through an affair, one does not grow in wisdom."
