3.14

師問僧：「汝是湖南出家那？」僧云：「是。」師云：「識三門下金剛麼？」僧云：「不可更識也。」師云：「野狐窟裏出頭。」無對。代云：「若不出頭。」代初問處云：「秖是箇泥人。」又云：「識得者泥人有甚用處？」又云：「念某甲新入眾。」

The Master asked a monk, "Did you leave home in Hunan?" The monk said, "Yes." The Master said, "Do you recognize the Vajrapāṇi beneath the triple gate?" The monk said, "It is impossible to recognize him further." The Master said, "Sticking your head out of a wild fox's den." There was no reply. Answering on his behalf, he said, "What if I don't stick my head out?" Answering on his behalf for the initial question, he said, "It is just a clay man." He also said, "What use is there in recognizing this clay man?" He also said, "Bear in mind that I have newly entered the assembly."
