問座主：「講什麼經？」主云：「《涅槃經》。」師云：「涅槃具四德是不？」主云：「是。」師拈起椀子云：「這箇具幾德？」主云：「一德也無。」師云：「古人因甚與麼道？」主云：「古人與麼道如何？」師敲椀子云：「會麼？」主云：「不會。」師云：「且講經著。」

He asked a lecture master, "What sūtra do you lecture on?" The master said, "The Nirvāṇa Sūtra." The Master said, "Does nirvāṇa possess the four virtues, or not?" The master said, "It does." The Master picked up a bowl and said, "How many virtues does this possess?" The master said, "It does not possess even one virtue." The Master said, "Why did the ancient say so?" The master said, "What about the ancient saying so?" The Master tapped the bowl and said, "Do you understand?" The master said, "I do not understand." The Master said, "Just go on lecturing on your sūtra."
