When the Master first visited Chan Master Zong of Muzhou, as soon as Muzhou saw the Master coming, he shut the gate. The Master then knocked on the gate. Muzhou said, "Who is it?" The Master said, "So-and-so." Muzhou said, "What are you doing?" The Master said, "My own affair is not yet clear; I beg the master for instruction." Muzhou opened the gate, took one look, and immediately shut it. The Master went and knocked on the gate like this for three days running. On the third day Muzhou finally opened the gate, whereupon the Master squeezed inside. Muzhou grabbed hold of him and said, "Speak! Speak!" The Master hesitated, and Muzhou shoved him away, saying, "A drill-lathe from the Qin dynasty!" From this the Master had an awakening. When the Master arrived at the manor of Xuefeng, he saw a monk. The Master asked, "Are you, senior monk, going up the mountain today?" The monk said, "Yes." The Master said, "I entrust you with a dialogue to ask the abbot upādhyāya, only you must not say they are another's words." The monk said, "Understood." The Master said, "When you, senior monk, arrive at the mountain and see the upādhyāya ascend the hall and the assembly has just gathered, step forward, clasp your hands together, stand firm, and say: 'Why does this old fellow not take off the iron cangue around his neck?'" That monk followed the Master's instructions completely. Seeing this monk speak like this, Xuefeng stepped down from his seat, grabbed the monk across the chest, and said, "Speak quickly! Speak quickly!" The monk had no reply. Xuefeng shoved him away and said, "These are not your words." The monk said, "They are my words." Xuefeng said, "Attendant, bring the ropes and staff!" The monk said, "They are not my words; it was a senior monk from Zhejiang at the manor who taught me to come and say this." Xuefeng said, "Great assembly! Go to the manor and welcome a good spiritual friend of five hundred people!" The next day the Master went up the mountain. As soon as Xuefeng saw him, he said, "Why have you arrived at such a state?" The Master lowered his head, and from this they were in accord.
