師在雪峯時，有僧問雪峯：「如何是觸目不會道，運足焉知路？」峯云：「蒼天蒼天。」僧不明，遂問師：「蒼天意旨如何？」師云：「三斤麻，一匹布。」僧云：「不會。」師云：「更奉三尺竹。」後雪峯聞喜云：「我常疑箇布衲。」

When the Master was at Xuefeng, a monk asked Xuefeng, "What is: 'Facing the eyes one cannot speak of the Way; moving one's feet, how can one know the path?'" Xuefeng said, "O blue heaven! O blue heaven!" The monk did not understand, and thereupon asked the Master, "What is the meaning of 'O blue heaven'?" The Master said, "Three pounds of hemp, one bolt of cloth." The monk said, "I do not understand." The Master said, "I further offer three feet of bamboo." Later, Xuefeng heard of this and said with delight, "I have always suspected that cloth-robed monk."
