The Master arrived at Caoshan. Caoshan instructed the assembly, saying, "In all directions they completely hold to fixed rules; why not utter a turning word for them to make them no longer doubt?" The Master then asked, "Why is one not aware of its presence in the most secret place?" Shan said, "Just because it is most secret, one is therefore not aware of its presence." The Master said, "How does such a person draw near?" Shan said, "Do not head toward the most secret place." The Master said, "If one does not head toward the most secret place, can one still draw near, or not?" Shan said, "Only then can one draw near." The Master assented, "Yes, yes." The Master asked Caoshan, "What is the conduct of a śramaṇa?" Shan said, "One who eats the crops of the permanent monastic property." The Master said, "What about when proceeding just like that?" Shan said, "Can you still nurture it?" The Master said, "This student can nurture it." Shan said, "How do you nurture it?" The Master said, "Wearing clothes and eating food, what difficulty is there?" Shan said, "Why do you not say 'wearing fur and bearing horns'?" The Master then made a bow. When Elder Tao brought up the Bodhisattva holding a red banner in hand and asked the Master, "What about it?" the Master said, "You are an ill-mannered fellow." Tao said, "In what way am I ill-mannered?" The Master said, "You are not even qualified to be a non-Buddhist's slave."
