The Master arrived at Shushan. Shushan asked, "Bring forth a sentence from your place of finding strength." The Master said, "Please, Upādhyāya, ask in a loud voice." Shan then asked in a loud voice. The Master said, "Did the upādhyāya eat gruel early this morning?" Shan said, "Why would I not eat gruel?" The Master said, "Why shout wildly?" Furthermore, Shushan instructed the assembly, saying, "Before the Xiantong era, this old monk understood the matters on the side of the dharmakāya; after the Xiantong era, I understood the transcendent matter of the dharmakāya." The Master asked, "I have heard that before the Xiantong era the upādhyāya understood the matters on the side of the dharmakāya, and after the Xiantong era you understood the transcendent matter of the dharmakāya. Is this so?" Shan said, "It is." The Master said, "What are the matters on the side of the dharmakāya?" Shan said, "A withered tree trunk." The Master said, "What is the transcendent matter of the dharmakāya?" Shan said, "Not a withered tree trunk." The Master said, "Do you still permit this student to speak of principle, or not?" Shan said, "I permit you to speak." The Master said, "Is not a withered tree trunk clarifying the matters on the side of the dharmakāya, and not a withered tree trunk clarifying the transcendent matter of the dharmakāya?" Shan said, "It is." The Master said, "Does the dharmakāya still encompass everything, or not?" Shan said, "How could it not encompass?" The Master pointed to the water purification pitcher and said, "Does the dharmakāya still encompass this?" Shan said, "Ācārya, do not understand it from the side of the water purification pitcher." The Master then made a bow.
