When the Master arrived in Jiangzhou, Minister Chen invited him to a vegetarian feast. Upon meeting, he asked, "I shall not ask about the Confucian texts, and the three vehicles and twelve divisions of the teachings have their own lecture masters—what is the patch-robed monk's business on pilgrimage?" The Master said, "How many people have you asked?" The Minister said, "At present, only the elder monk." The Master said, "Put aside the present moment—what is the meaning of the teaching?" The Minister said, "Yellow scrolls and red rollers." The Master said, "These are written words and spoken language; what is the meaning of the teaching?" The Minister said, "The mouth wishes to speak, yet words fail; the mind wishes to cognize, yet thoughts are forgotten." The Master said, "'The mouth wishes to speak, yet words fail' is said in response to having words; 'the mind wishes to cognize, yet thoughts are forgotten' is said in response to deluded thoughts. What is the meaning of the teaching?" The Minister was silent. The Master said, "I hear that the Minister reads the Lotus Sūtra; is that so?" The Minister said, "It is." The Master said, "The sūtra says: 'All worldly livelihoods and professions do not contravene the dharmatā.' Tell me, in the Heaven of Neither Conception Nor Non-conception, how many people fall from their rank?" The Minister was silent. The Master said, "Minister, do not be so hasty. We monks cast aside the ten sūtras and five treatises, and purposely enter the monastic groves, yet after ten or twenty years we still can do nothing about it. How could the Minister understand it?" The Minister bowed and said, "It is my fault."
