Your disciple, He Xifan, Defense Commissioner of Shaozhou, concurrently Holding-Back Commander, Provisionally in Charge of Military and Prefectural Affairs, Grand Master of the Silver-Blue and Glorious Luster, Acting Minister of the Ministry of War, Censor-in-Chief, and Pillar of State, along with the officials of the entire commandery, respectfully invite Master Yan, the First Seat of the Lingshu Chan Monastery, to open the hall and preach the Dharma with deep respect for His Majesty the Emperor, so as to contribute to the imperial longevity. We humbly reflect that when Kāśyapa Mātaṅga came from the west, he greatly prospered the teaching of the Great Vehicle; when Bodhidharma arrived in the east, he transmitted the lineage of the mind-seal. Thus, the Dharma torch is lit to illuminate the darkness, and the vessel of compassion is steered to rescue the drowning. We humbly reflect that you, Upādhyāya, have the pearl of wisdom gleaming with radiance, and the mirror of the mind shining with brilliance. The ocean of your nature is profoundly deep, beyond the reach of consciousness; the wellspring of your words is mystical and profound, beyond the grasp of intellectual knowledge. You are able to open the gate of the single mark and transcend the realm of the six dusts. The Lingshu Chan Monastery is an ancient spiritual site and a supreme, extraordinary place. Since Great Master Zhisheng passed away, having secretly conferred words of entrustment, the Emperor conducted an inspection tour and gloriously favored it with splendid mandates; it is truly sufficient to serve as the pillar and base of Jetavana and the raft of the Brahma realm, toward which the monastic assembly takes refuge with devout minds, and officials and commoners revere with utmost sincerity. Having undeservedly assumed this mandate of authority and erroneously governed this illustrious realm, I have had the good fortune to encounter the noble style of the Dharma master. I pray that you will occupy the room of the abbot's quarters, aspiring to make universal deliverance your benefit without harboring thoughts of self-interest, yielding slightly to those who struggle through the briars, awaiting the gathering of the assembly like clouds. Humbly submitting to this request, I will forthwith submit a memorial to the throne.
