3.53

師在西京時問僧：「爾是甚處人？」僧云：「于闐國人。」師云：「還到西天麼？」僧云：「到。」師拈起拄杖云：「掣電之機不問爾，還到這裏麼？」僧云：「不會。」師呵呵大笑，代云：「深領和尚降尊就卑。」又云：「將謂此土無。」又云：「勳。」

When the Master was in the Western Capital, he asked a monk, "Where are you from?"
The monk said, "A native of the Kingdom of Khotan."
The Master said, "Did you ever reach the Western Heavens (India)?"
The monk said, "I did."
The Master held up his staff and said, "Without asking you about lightning-swift functioning, did you ever reach here?"
The monk said, "I do not understand."
The Master laughed aloud in great laughter.
Answering on their behalf, [the Master] said, "I deeply appreciate the Upādhyāya humbling himself to accommodate the lowly."
He also said, "I thought this land did not have it."
He also said, "Merit."
