The Master saw written on the beam of a watermill: 'May it remain forever undecayed,' but later it fell into disrepair. The Master asked a monk, "Since it was to 'remain forever undecayed,' why was it swept away by water?"
There was no reply.
Answering on their behalf, [the Master] said, "Without experiencing an affair, it is hard to grow in wisdom."
He also said, "Even the sovereign rules of Yao and Shun were subject to transformation."
