3.70

問僧：「什麼處來？」僧云：「南華塔頭來。」師云：「還見祖師麼？」僧云：「用見作什麼？」師云：「爾又去那裏作什麼？」僧云：「有什麼過？」師云：「既去無過，見有什麼過？」無對。代云：「若不如是，爭知慈悲。」

[The Master] asked a monk, "Where have you come from?"
The monk said, "I have come from the stūpa site at Nanhua."
The Master said, "Did you see the Patriarch?"
The monk said, "What would be the use of seeing him?"
The Master said, "Then what did you go there to do?"
The monk said, "What fault is there?"
The Master said, "Since going has no fault, what fault could seeing have?"
There was no reply.
Answering on their behalf, he said, "If it were not so, how could one know compassion?"
