師送菓子上溈山，溈山接得，問：「子甚麼處得來？」師云：「家園底。」溈山云：「堪喫也未？」師云：「未敢甞，先獻和尚。」溈山云：「是阿誰底？」師云：「慧寂底。」溈山云：「既是子底，因甚麼教我先甞？」師云：「和尚甞千甞萬。」溈山便喫，云：「猶帶酸澁在。」師云：「酸澁莫非自知？」溈山不答。

The Master brought some fruit up to Guishan. Guishan took it and asked: "Where did you get this from?" The Master said: "From the family garden." Guishan said: "Is it fit to eat yet?" The Master said: "I did not dare to taste it; I present it first to the Upādhyāya." Guishan said: "Whose is it?" The Master said: "It is Huiji's." Guishan said: "Since it is yours, why do you make me taste it first?" The Master said: "The Upādhyāya has tasted thousands and tens of thousands of them." Guishan then ate it and said: "It still carries some sour astringency." The Master said: "Could sour astringency be unknown to oneself?" Guishan did not answer.
