1.32

南塔光涌禪師北遊謁臨濟，復歸侍師。師云：「汝來作甚麼？」南塔云：「禮覲和尚。」師云：「還見和尚麼？」南塔云：「見。」師云：「和尚何似驢？」南塔云：「某甲見和尚亦不似佛。」師云：「若不似佛，似箇甚麼？」南塔云：「若有所似，與驢何別？」師大驚云：「凡、聖兩忘，情盡體露。吾以此驗人二十年，無決了者，子保任之。」師每謂人云：「此子肉身佛也。」

Chan Master Nanta Guangyong traveled north on pilgrimage to call upon Linji, and then returned to attend upon the Master. The Master said, "What have you come to do?" Nanta said, "To pay respects to the upādhyāya." The Master said, "Do you still see the upādhyāya?" Nanta said, "I see him." The Master said, "What does the upādhyāya resemble—a donkey?" Nanta said, "I see that the upādhyāya also does not resemble a Buddha." The Master said, "If he does not resemble a Buddha, what does he resemble?" Nanta said, "If there were anything he resembled, how would he differ from a donkey?" The Master was greatly astonished and said, "Ordinary and sacred are both forgotten; emotional views are exhausted and the substance is revealed. For twenty years I have tested people with this, and none has ever thoroughly resolved it. Guard and maintain it, my son!" The Master would often say to people, "This child is a living-flesh Buddha."
