師住東平時，溈山令僧送書并鏡與師。師上堂，提起示眾，云：「且道是溈山鏡？東平鏡？若道是東平鏡，又是溈山送來；若道是溈山鏡，又在東平手裏。道得則留取，道不得則撲破去也。」眾無語，師遂撲破，便下座。（五祖戒云：「更請和尚說道理看。」驀奪打破。）

When the Master was residing at Dongping, Guishan sent a monk to deliver a letter along with a mirror to the Master. The Master ascended the hall, held it up to show the assembly, and said, "Tell me, is it Guishan's mirror or Dongping's mirror? If you say it is Dongping's mirror, it was sent by Guishan; if you say it is Guishan's mirror, it is in Dongping's hands. If you can speak, I will keep it; if you cannot speak, I will smash it to pieces." The assembly was silent. The Master then smashed it and stepped down from the seat. (Wuzu Jie said, "Ask the Upādhyāya to explain the principle further." He suddenly snatched it and broke it.)
