僧參次，便問：「和尚還識字否？」師云：「隨分。」僧以手畫此○相拓呈，師以衣袖拂之。僧又作此○相拓呈，師以兩手作背拋勢。僧以目視之，師低頭。僧遶師一匝，師便打，僧遂出去。

While a monk was calling upon him, the monk asked, "Does the Upādhyāya recognize written characters or not?"
The Master said, "According to capacity."
The monk drew this circular figure ○ with his hand and presented it, lifting it up. The Master brushed it away with his sleeve. The monk again made this circular figure ○ and presented it, lifting it up; the Master made a gesture of tossing it behind his back with both hands. The monk looked at him with eyes fixed; the Master lowered his head. The monk circled around the Master once. The Master struck him, and the monk then left.
