1.58

師問僧：「近離甚處？」云：「南方。」師舉拄杖云：「彼中老宿還說這箇麼？」云：「不說。」師云：「既不說這箇，還說那箇否？」云：「不說。」師召：「大德！」僧應諾。師云：「參堂去。」僧便出。師復召云：「大德！」僧回首。師云：「近前來。」僧近前，師以拄杖頭上點一下，云：「去。」（雲門偃云：「仰山若無後語，爭識得人。」）

The Master asked a monk, "Where did you leave recently?"
He said, "The south."
The Master held up his staff and said, "Do the venerable elders there still speak of this?"
He said, "They do not speak of it."
The Master said, "Since they do not speak of this, do they speak of that?"
He said, "They do not speak of it."
The Master called out, "Venerable!"
The monk answered, "Yes?"
The Master said, "Go to the monks' hall."
The monk then walked out. The Master called out again, "Venerable!"
The monk turned his head.
The Master said, "Come forward."
The monk came forward, and the Master tapped once on the monk's head with his staff, saying, "Go." (Yunmen Yan said, "If Yangshan did not have the subsequent words, how could he have recognized the person?")
