溈山一日指田問師：「這丘田，那頭高，這頭低。」師云：「却是這頭高，那頭低。」溈山云：「爾若不信，向中間立看兩頭。」師云：「不必中間立，亦莫住兩頭。」溈山云：「若如是，著水看，水能平物。」師云：「水亦無定，但高處高平、低處低平。」溈山便休。

One day, Guishan pointed to a field and asked the Master, "In this plot of field, that end is high and this end is low." The Master said, "On the contrary, this end is high and that end is low." Guishan said, "If you do not believe it, stand in the middle and look at both ends." The Master said, "There is no need to stand in the middle, nor should one dwell at either end." Guishan said, "If so, pour water and look; water can level things." The Master said, "Water also has no fixed state: where it is high, it is high-level; where it is low, it is low-level." Guishan then dropped the matter.
