3.51

上堂，舉：「溈山與仰山行次，溈山指一丘田謂仰山云：『這頭得恁麼高，那頭得恁麼低。』仰山云：『却是那頭高，這頭低。』溈山云：『爾若不信，但向田中立，看兩頭。』仰山云：『不必中間立，亦莫住兩頭。』溈山云：『若如是著水看，水能平物。』仰山云：『水亦無定，但高處高平，低處低平。』溈山便休。」師云：「顯諸仁，藏諸用，鼓萬物而不與聖人同憂，盛德大業至矣哉。」喝一喝。

Ascending the hall, [the Master] cited: "As Guishan and Yangshan were walking, Guishan pointed to a plot of land and said to Yangshan, 'This end is so high, and that end is so low.' Yangshan said, 'On the contrary, that end is high, and this end is low.' Guishan said, 'If you do not believe it, just stand in the middle of the field and look at both ends.' Yangshan said, 'There is no need to stand in the middle, nor should one stay at either end.' Guishan said, 'If that is so, apply water and see; water can level things.' Yangshan said, 'Water also has no fixed [level]; it is merely high-level where it is high, and low-level where it is low.' Guishan then rested." The Master said, "'Manifesting in benevolence, concealed in functioning, stirring the ten thousand things without sharing the worries of the sage'—abundant virtue and great achievement have reached the ultimate!" He gave a shout.
