溈山舉百丈問黃檗甚處去來，黃檗云：「大雄山下採𮏄子來。」百丈云：「還見大蟲麼？」黃檗便作虎聲，百丈拈斧作斫勢，黃檗遂與百丈一摑，百丈吟吟而笑便歸。陞堂謂眾云：「大雄山下有一大蟲，汝等諸人也須好看，百丈老漢今日親遭一口。」問師：「作麼生？」師云：「和尚怎生？」溈山云：「百丈當時便合一斧斫殺，因甚麼到如此？」師云：「不然。」溈山云：「子又作麼生？」師云：「百丈只解騎虎頭，不解把虎尾。」溈山云：「子有嶮崖之句。」

Guishan brought up how Baizhang asked Huangbo where he had come from, and Huangbo said, "I have come from picking mushrooms at the foot of Mount Daxiong." Baizhang said, "Did you see the tiger?" Huangbo then made a tiger's roar, and Baizhang picked up an axe in a chopping posture. Huangbo then gave Baizhang a slap; Baizhang chuckled and went back. He ascended the hall and said to the assembly, "At the foot of Mount Daxiong there is a tiger; all of you should watch out for it carefully. This old fellow Baizhang personally suffered a bite today." He asked the Master, "How is it?" The Master said, "What do you say, upādhyāya?" Guishan said, "Baizhang should have struck it dead with a single axe-blow at that moment; why did it come to this?" The Master said, "Not so." Guishan said, "And what do you say?" The Master said, "Baizhang only knew how to ride the tiger's head, but did not know how to hold the tiger's tail." Guishan said, "You have words of sheer peril."
