溈山舉南泉問黃檗：「定、慧等學明見佛性，此理如何？」黃檗云：「十二時中不依倚一物。」南泉云：「莫便是長老見處麼？」黃檗云：「不敢。」南泉云：「漿水錢且置，草鞋錢教誰還？」黃檗休去。問師云：「莫是黃檗搆他南泉不得麼？」師云：「不然，須知黃檗有陷虎之機。」溈山云：「子見處得與麼長？」

Guishan brought up Nanquan asking Huangbo: "'Equal practice of concentration and wisdom clearly reveals the buddhadhātu'—what is this principle?" Huangbo said, "Throughout the twelve periods of the day, not leaning on a single thing." Nanquan said, "Could that be the elder's view?" Huangbo said, "I would not dare." Nanquan said, "Let the cost of rice water be; who is to pay for the straw sandals?" Huangbo fell silent. Guishan asked the Master, "Was Huangbo unable to get the better of Nanquan?" The Master said, "Not so; one must recognize that Huangbo possessed the dynamic to trap a tiger." Guishan said, "Has your view reached such depth?"
