The Master's teaching reached Jinling, where he sat at three great bodhimaṇḍas, expounding the essential principle morning and night. At that time the monasteries in all quarters conformed to his transformative influence; people from other lands who longed for his Dharma traveled from afar to arrive. The orthodox school of Xuansha was revived in the regions south of the Yangtze. The Master harmonized with capacities and adapted to circumstances, reprimanding stagnation and polishing away dullness. Whenever the samādhis of the various quarters were brought forward, whether [disciples] entered his room to present their understanding or raised queries to seek instruction, he always dispensed medicine according to the sickness; those who awakened in accord with their capacities were beyond counting. On the seventeenth day of the seventh month in the fifth year of Xiande of the Zhou dynasty (a wuwu year), he showed sickness; the sovereign of the state personally paid respects and inquired after him. On the fifth day of the intercalary month, having shaved his head and bathed his body, he addressed the assembly, sat cross-legged, and passed away. His appearance was as if alive; his age was seventy-four, his monastic age fifty-four. The monasteries throughout the capital prepared ceremonial regalia to meet and guide [the procession]; the ministers and lords, from Li Jianxun on down, dressed in plain mourning garments and escorted his whole body to Danyang in Jiangning County, where a stūpa was erected. He was posthumously named Chan Master Dáfǎyǎn; the stūpa was called Signless. Later, Lord Li founded Baoci Monastery and ordered the Master's disciple Xuanjue Yan Daoshi to inaugurate the teachings, and conferred upon the Master the additional posthumous title Great Guiding Master Dazhizang (End).
