The Master had long studied under Changqing Leng, but later succeeded Dizang. Under Changqing's assembly was Head Monk Zizhao, who had continually discussed ancient and modern words and phrases with the Master. When Zhao first heard [of the Master's succession], he felt indignant in his heart. One day, he led a group to Fuzhou specifically to hold the Master to account. Learning of this, the Master led the assembly out to welcome him and treated him with special courtesy. At both host and guest seats, a fly-whisk was hung. Over tea, Zhao suddenly changed his expression and asked in a raised voice, "When the elder opened the hall, whose lineage did you truly inherit?" The Master said, "Dizang's." Zhao said, "Why have you so completely turned your back on our late teacher Changqing? You and I were together under his assembly for several decades, discussing the ancient and modern without any division. Why then did you succeed Dizang?" The Master said, "I did not understand one of Changqing's turning encounters." Zhao said, "Why did you not ask about it?" The Master said, "Changqing said, 'Solitarily revealing the body amidst the myriad phenomena.' What does this mean?" Zhao raised his fly-whisk. The Master shouted at him, "Head monk, this is something learned in those years! How else do you take it?" Zhao had no words. The Master said, "Just as in 'solitarily revealing the body amidst the myriad phenomena'—does it set aside the myriad phenomena, or not set aside the myriad phenomena?" Zhao said, "It does not set them aside." The Master said, "That makes two!" At that time, the followers who accompanied Zhao cried out in unison, "It sets aside the myriad phenomena!" The Master said, "What about 'solitarily revealing the body amidst the myriad phenomena'?!" Zhao and the whole group retreated in disarray and shame. The Master pointed and stopped him, saying, "Head monk! Killing one's father and killing one's mother can still be confessed and repented; slandering mahāprajñā is truly difficult to confess and repent!" Zhao in the end had no reply. From then on he studied under the Master, clarified his own insight, and never opened a hall again.
