The Master's personal name was Wenyi; he was a son of the Lu family of Yuhang. At the age of seven, he had his head shaved under Chan Master Quanwei of Zhitong Monastery in Xinding. In his youth, he received full ordination at Kaiyuan Temple in Yuezhou. He attached himself to the Vinaya master Xijue, who was flourishing in his teaching at Yuwang Monastery on Mount Mao in Mingzhou. The Master went to attend and study under him, thoroughly examining its subtle tenets; moreover, he made a parallel study of Confucian classics, consorting in literary circles. Master Jue regarded him as the Zi You and Zi Xia of his school. Because a single stir of the profound impulse occurred, he cast aside all miscellaneous affairs, shook his staff, and journeyed south. Arriving in Fuzhou, he called upon Changqing, but did not have a great awakening. Later, together with Shaoxiu and Fajin, the three of them wished to cross the mountain pass. Passing by Dizang Monastery, they were halted by snow and rested briefly. While gathered by the brazier, Dizang asked, "Where is this journey bound?" The Master said, "On an itinerant pilgrimage." Dizang said, "What is the matter of an itinerant pilgrimage?" The Master said, "I do not know." Dizang said, "Not knowing is most intimate." Furthermore, together with the three people, they brought up the Zhaolun, arriving at the point where it says, "Heaven and earth share the same root as me." Dizang said, "Are the mountains, rivers, and the great earth identical with or distinct from the sthavira's own self?" The Master said, "Distinct." Dizang held up two fingers. The Master said, "Identical." Dizang again held up two fingers, then got up and left. When the snow cleared and they took their leave to depart, Dizang saw them off to the gate and asked, saying, "The sthavira usually says that the three realms are mind-only, and the ten thousand dharmas are consciousness-only." Pointing to a piece of stone below the courtyard, he said, "Tell me, is this stone inside the mind or outside the mind?" The Master said, "Inside the mind." Dizang said, "For what reason does an itinerant pilgrim place a piece of stone on his mind?" The Master was at a loss and had nothing to reply, so he immediately laid down his pack, took a place in the assembly, and sought determination. For over a month, he presented his views and explained the principles daily. Dizang said to him, "The Buddha-Dharma is not like this." The Master said, "My words are exhausted and principles are terminated." Dizang said, "If one speaks of the Buddha-Dharma, everything is manifest and accomplished." At these words the Master was greatly enlightened, and so he deliberated and stayed. Master Jin and the others wished to tour the monasteries of the Jiangbiao region and urged the Master to go with them. Arriving in Linchuan, the prefect of the prefecture invited him to abide at Chongshou Monastery.
