At the opening of the hall, at midday, he was seated at the tea reception and had not yet risen. At that time, the monastic controller reported to the Master, saying, "The fourfold assembly has already surrounded the upādhyāya's Dharma seat." The Master said, "The assembly should instead call upon a true kalyāṇamitra." Shortly afterwards he ascended the hall. A monk asked, "The great assembly has gathered like clouds; we request the Master to expound." The Master said, "The great assembly has been standing for a long time." He then said, "Since everyone is fully gathered here, this mountain monk cannot remain speechless; I will present an ancient's skillful means to the great assembly. Take care." He then stepped down from the seat. Sthavira Zifang came from Changqing. The Master quoted Upādhyāya Changqing Leng's verse and asked, saying, "What is 'solitarily revealing the body amidst the myriad phenomena'?" Zifang raised his fly-whisk. The Master said, "How can understanding it like this do?" [Zifang] said, "What is the upādhyāya's venerated intention?" The Master said, "What do you call the myriad phenomena?" [Zifang] said, "The ancients did not set aside the myriad phenomena." The Master said, "'Solitarily revealing the body amidst the myriad phenomena'—what is all this talk of setting aside or not setting aside?" Zifang was suddenly enlightened and presented a verse expressing his devotion. From this time on, those in the assemblies of various regions who harboured intellectual understanding arrived in great numbers. At first they were assertive and proud; but when the Master gently provoked them, they all gradually submitted with heartfelt respect. The assembly of those who came from afar to study under him constantly numbered no less than a thousand.
