師問僧：「甚處來？」云：「泗州禮拜大聖來。」師云：「今年大聖出塔否？」僧云：「出。」師却問傍僧云：「汝道，伊到泗州不到？」（浮山遠云：「這僧到即到泗州，只是不見大聖。」道場全云：「這僧見即見大聖，不曾識法眼。」東禪觀云：「這僧到也到泗州，見也見大聖，識也識法眼，只是自討頭不見。」）

The master asked a monk, "Where have you come from?" The monk said, "I have come from Sizhou after paying homage to the Great Saint." The master said, "Did the Great Saint come out of the pagoda this year or not?" The monk said, "He did." The master then asked an attendant monk nearby, "Tell me, did he go to Sizhou or not?" (Fushan Yuan said, "As for this monk going, he went to Sizhou; he only did not see the Great Saint." Daode Quan said, "As for this monk seeing, he saw the Great Saint; he had just never recognized Fayan." Dongshan Guan said, "This monk indeed went to Sizhou, indeed saw the Great Saint, and indeed recognized Fayan; he only searched for his own head and could not find it.")
