光孝慧覺禪師至師處，師問：「近離甚處？」覺云：「趙州。」師云：「承聞趙州有柏樹子話，是不？」覺云：「無。」師云：「往來皆謂『僧問：「如何是祖師西來意？」趙州云：「庭前柏樹子。」』上座何得道無？」覺云：「先師實無此語，和尚莫謗先師好。」（徑山杲云：「若道有此語，蹉過覺鐵嘴；若道無此語，又蹉過法眼；若兩邊俱不涉，又蹉過趙州。直饒總不恁麼，別有透脫一路，入地獄如箭射。」鼓山珪云：「覺鐵嘴名不虛得，只是不曾夢見趙州。」）

Chan Master Guangxiao Huijue came to the Master's place. The Master asked, "Where have you recently departed from?" Jue said, "Zhaozhou." The Master said, "I have heard that Zhaozhou has the public case of the cypress tree; is it so or not?" Jue said, "No." The Master said, "Everyone coming and going says: 'A monk asked, "What is the meaning of the ancestral master's coming from the West?" Zhaozhou said, "The cypress tree in the courtyard."' How can you, Sthavira, say there was none?" Jue said, "My late master truly had no such words. Upādhyāya, do not slander my late master." (Jingshan Gao said: "If you say there were such words, you miss Iron-Mouth Jue; if you say there were no such words, you miss Fayan again; if you do not touch either side, you also miss Zhaozhou. Even if it were completely not like this and there were a separate path of breakthrough and emancipation, it would be entering hell like a shot arrow." Gushan Gui said: "Iron-Mouth Jue did not gain his name in vain, but he never even dreamed of Zhaozhou.")
