永明道潛禪師，河中府人，初參師，師問云：「子於參請外，看甚麼經？」道潛云：「《華嚴經》。」師云：「總別同異成壞六相，是何門攝屬？」潛云：「文在〈十地品〉中，據理則世出世間一切法皆具六相也。」師云：「空還具六相也無？」潛懵然無對，師云：「汝問我，我向汝道。」潛乃問：「空還具六相也無？」師云：「空。」潛於是開悟，踊躍禮謝，師云：「子作麼生會？」潛云：「空。」師然之。異日，四眾士女入院，師問潛云：「律中道，隔壁聞釵釧聲，即名破戒。見覩金銀合雜，朱紫駢闐，是破戒，不是破戒？」潛云：「好箇入路。」師云：「子向後有五百毳徒，為王侯所重在。」

Chan Master Yongming Daoqian was a man of Hezhong prefecture. When he first visited the Master for instruction, the Master asked, "Besides consultations and inquiries, what sūtra do you read?" Daoqian said, "The Huayan Sūtra." The Master said, "To which portal do the six characteristics—the universal, particular, same, different, formed, and unformed—belong?" Qian said, "The text is in the 'Ten Grounds Chapter'. According to principle, all mundane and supramundane dharmas possess the six characteristics." The Master said, "Does emptiness also possess the six characteristics or not?" Qian was bewildered and had no reply. The Master said, "Ask me, and I will tell you." Qian then asked, "Does emptiness also possess the six characteristics or not?" The Master said, "Empty." Qian thereupon had an awakening, leapt up, and bowed in gratitude. The Master said, "How do you understand?" Qian said, "Empty." The Master approved it. Another day, when male and female lay followers of the fourfold assembly entered the monastery, the Master asked Qian, "The Vinaya says that hearing the sound of hairpins and bracelets through a wall is called breaking the precepts. Seeing gold and silver intermingled, and red and purple robes crowding together—is it breaking the precepts or not breaking the precepts?" Qian said, "What an excellent entryway!" The Master said, "Hereafter you will have five hundred monastic disciples and will be held in high esteem by kings and lords."
