文遂導師，杭州人，嘗究《首楞嚴》，謁師述已所業，深符經旨。師云：「《楞嚴》豈不是有八還義？」遂云：「是。」師云：「明還甚麼？」云：「明還日輪。」師云：「日還甚麼？」遂懵然無對，師誡令焚其所注之文。自此服膺請益，始忘知解。

Guide Wensui was a man of Hangzhou. He had once thoroughly investigated the Śūraṅgama [Sūtra]. When he called upon the Master and described what he had studied, it deeply accorded with the sūtra's purport. The Master said, "Does the Śūraṅgama not have the doctrine of the eight returns?" Sui said, "It does." The Master said, "To what does brightness return?" He said, "Brightness returns to the sun disc." The Master said, "To what does the sun return?" Sui was bewildered and had no reply. The Master admonished him and had him burn the commentaries he had written. From then on, he served with devotion and sought instruction, only then forgetting intellectual understanding.
