Chan Master Guizong Xuance was a man of Caozhou. Originally named Huichao, he called upon the Master and asked, "Huichao inquires of the upādhyāya: What is the Buddha?" The Master said, "You are Huichao." Chao was enlightened from this. (Yuanwu said: "Some say, 'When wisdom arises, that is Buddha; that is why Fayan answered thus.' Some say, 'It is very much like riding an ox to look for an ox.' Some say, 'The place of asking is it.' What connection is there? If one understands it like this, not only does one let down oneself, one also profoundly wrongs the ancients." Xuedou's verse says:
"The spring breeze in the river country does not blow; / The partridge cries amid the deep blossoms.
When the waves of the three cascades run high, the fish turns into a dragon, / While foolish men still bail out the night pond's water.")
