上堂云：「夫參學之流，須具啐啄同時眼，若不具啐啄同時眼，未有參學分在。所以鏡清云：『子致啐時，又不能致于母啄；母致啄時，又不能致于子啐。』問：『子致啐時，於學人分上，明得箇什麼邊事？』清云：『且但保任，未用鏡清啄破。』『若的實論，又成得箇什麼邊事？』清云：『親明取好。』『為什麼不能致于母啄？』清云：『觜軟于母。』『母致啄時，諸方分上，又成得箇什麼邊事？』清云：『露箇面目。』『若的實論，又成得箇什麼邊事？』清云：『好箇商量。』『為什麼不能致子啐？』清云：『老作少難。』『直得啐啄同時時如何？』清云：『亦有不曾經歷于此者。』『只如不曾經歷于此者，還有超昇分也無？』清云：『吽吽，誰敢坐虎頭。』」

Ascending the hall, the master said: "Those who engage in study must possess the eye of simultaneous pecking from within and without. If one does not possess the eye of simultaneous pecking from within and without, one has not yet had a share in study. Therefore Jingqing said: 'When the chick pecks from within, it cannot bring about the mother's pecking from without; when the mother pecks from without, she cannot bring about the chick's pecking from within.'
Someone asked: 'When the chick pecks from within, on the student's part, what sort of matter is understood?'
Jingqing said: 'Just maintain it for now; there is no need yet for Jingqing to peck it open.'
'If one speaks of it truly, what sort of matter does it amount to?'
Jingqing said: 'It is best to understand it personally.'
'Why can it not bring about the mother's pecking from without?'
Jingqing said: 'Its beak is softer than the mother's.'
'When the mother pecks from without, on the part of the various regions, what sort of matter does it amount to?'
Jingqing said: 'It reveals a face.'
'If one speaks of it truly, what sort of matter does it amount to?'
Jingqing said: 'A fine discussion.'
'Why can it not bring about the chick's pecking from within?'
Jingqing said: 'It is difficult for the old to act as the young.'
'Just when pecking from within and without are simultaneous, how is it?'
Jingqing said: 'There are also those who have never experienced this.'
'As for those who have never experienced this, do they still have a share of transcendence or not?'
Jingqing said: 'Hum, hum! Who dares sit on the tiger's head?'"
