In an informal gathering, the master said: "Before the portents have arisen, who discusses the ordinary and the sacred? As soon as there is the point of a blade, a flaw is immediately formed. How can one, throughout all times, not darken the lamp of the patriarchs?"
A monk asked, "What is the lamp of the patriarchs?"
The master said, "It illuminates the One."
[The monk] asked, "How is it after illuminating?"
The master said, "It kindles."
[The monk] asked, "From of old the sages had not a single dharma to give people; I wonder, what does the Master transmit today?"
The master said, "The approaching wind can be discerned."
[The monk] asked, "When the dragon roars and spews mist, it universally moistens all living beings; I wonder, with what can this be repaid?"
The master said, "This kindness is deep and thick."
"In that case, the great assembly is soaked in kindness."
The master said, "A single drop of water is hard to digest."
[The monk] asked, "The lion yawns and stretches, host and guest are revealed; how is it with the family style of Fenyang?"
The master said, "Only when one's skull splits does one know shame."
"Having already been favored with the Master's indication of the ancestral style, what is the Lion of Xihe?"
The master said, "Stop putting on an offensive show!"
[The monk] asked, "'Nirvāṇa has no divergent paths, but skillful means have many gates'; what is the phrase of the path without divergence?"
The master said, "The bell and drum are distinctly present; the sun and moon have never grown dim."
"In that case, it is a dog barking at the sound of a person."
The master said, "It does not bite someone in tattered clothes."
[The monk] asked, "'If one is a true practitioner of the Way, one does not see the faults of the world'; I wonder, what fault is not seen?"
The master said, "Snow buries the night moon three feet deep; sailing a boat on dry land for ten thousand miles."
"What state of mind is the Venerable's?"
The master said, "It is actually your state of mind."
[The monk] asked, "Kāśyapa transmitted the robe; Ānanda knocked down the flagpole; I wonder, what sort of matter was accomplished?"
The master said, "The blinking of an eye does not exhaust the brightness; a catching of breath cuts off any true intimate."
"In that case, clouds arise on the Southern Mountain, and rain falls on the Northern Mountain."
The master said, "Clouds rising brings on rain; dew freezing forms frost."
[The monk] asked, "What is the matter that Kāśyapa personally heard?"
The master shouted. The monk bowed. The master then struck him. The master said, "If one were under Drinker of Light, the moment one even hesitated, one would already be ten thousand mountains and rivers away; how much less should one ask what was personally heard—how could one be fit to converse with? How could fellows such as this emulate the former sages? Those of the sort who merely learn words, with dust and sand in an ocean of ink, are unable to awaken suddenly and feel ashamed of themselves; following the stream and taking shadows for reality, they falsely produce knots and joints. When will there be an end? Failing to turn back the light and instead exploring waves of consciousness, though the kalpa-stone be completely worn away, they still cannot have faith in themselves. How bitter, how bitter! Therefore Śākyamuni called them pitiable ones. More words make one drift further away. Take care!"
