The master then brought up the late Master Guangde: "Together with Shi Daozhe, each had sayings on the Prince." A monk requested the master to provide capping phrases, asking: "How is it before the Prince ascends the court?"
The master said, "The six palaces sing with the rhythm of snow; the eight realms listen to the music of Shun."
"How is it right when he ascends the court?"
The master said, "The jade seal displays no text; the ten thousand states all bow their heads."
"How is it after he ascends the court?"
The master said, "In plain clothes he inquires of an old farmer; throughout the entire realm no one recognizes him."
The verse says:
"The Prince across the three courts is both noble and exalted;
Transmitted from past to present, who can divide them?
The eight realms and six palaces honor the transformation with beauty;
Fenyang's seal is exact—do not be confused!"
