上堂，僧問：「從上一人行棒，一人行喝，未審成得箇什麼邊事？」師云：「總不曾用。」「堪嗟楚下鐘離末。」師云：「庶子當機失戰場。」僧喝，師云：「作家。」僧禮拜，師云：「却不作家。」以拄杖點一喝。問：「大悲千手眼，如何是正眼？」師云：「瞎。」「恁麼則一條拄杖兩人舁。」師云：「三家村裏唱巴歌。」「恁麼則和尚同在裏頭。」師云：「謝汝慇懃。」問：「文殊與維摩讚善，此意如何？」師云：「錯下名言。」「恁麼則此語甚當也。」師云：「又遭剝脫。」問：「殺父殺母，佛前懺悔，殺佛殺祖，向什麼處懺悔？」師云：「燈連挑夜月，度盡幾多人。」「恁麼則水精宮裏觀明月。」師云：「映眸明寶燭，分照爍精幢。」問：「如何是轉輪王身？」師云：「七寶鎮相隨，千子常圍遶。」「恁麼則好事不如無。」師以拂子擗口打。問：「大作業底人來，師還相為也無？」師云：「朝打三千，暮打八百。」「恁麼則眉分八字，眼似金剛。」師云：「泥人退步。」問：「皓月雖明，不藏燈影時如何？」師云：「白雪深三尺，紅輪爍半天。」「多應不見舊時人也。」師云：「山高隔不得，雲散自東西。」問：「不避危亡，請師一接。」師云：「南有雪峯，北有趙州。」「恁麼則聒煩和尚也。」師云：「天台石橋窄，清涼座具寬。」「新羅事又作麼生？」師便打。問：「離四句，絕百非，請師別道。」師云：「六六三十六。」「恁麼則風聲浩浩也。」師云：「九九八十一。」僧禮拜，師有頌：「風聲浩浩語喧喧，借問諸賢何物宣，一句了然超百億，誰人更問箇中玄。」

Ascending the hall, a monk asked: "From of old, one used the staff and one used the shout; I wonder, what sort of matter was accomplished?"
The master said, "Neither was ever used at all."
"Lamentable is the end of Zhongli under Chu!"
The master said, "The common son, meeting the occasion, lost the battlefield."
The monk shouted. The master said, "An adept!"
The monk bowed. The master said, "Not an adept after all!" With his staff he pointed and gave a shout.
[The monk] asked, "The Great Compassionate One has a thousand hands and eyes; what is the correct eye?"
The master said, "Blind."
"In that case, one staff is carried by two people."
The master said, "Singing a folk song in a rustic village."
"In that case, the Venerable is in it together."
The master said, "Thank you for your diligence."
[The monk] asked, "Mañjuśrī and Vimalakīrti praised what is good; what is the meaning of this?"
The master said, "A mistaken application of names and words."
"In that case, these words are very fitting."
The master said, "Stripped and peeled once again!"
[The monk] asked, "If one kills one's father and mother, one repents before the Buddha; if one kills the Buddha and patriarchs, in what place does one repent?"
The master said, "Lamps continuously raised against the night moon have delivered how many people!"
"In that case, one contemplates the bright moon inside a crystal palace."
The master said, "Reflected in the eyes, the precious candle shines brightly; shining in parts, it illuminates the pure banner."
[The monk] asked, "What is the body of the Wheel-Turning King?"
The master said, "The seven treasures constantly accompany him; a thousand sons always surround him."
"In that case, a good thing is not as good as nothing."
The master struck him across the mouth with his whisk.
[The monk] asked, "When a person of great karmic deeds comes, does the Master still help him or not?"
The master said, "Three thousand blows in the morning, eight hundred blows in the evening."
"In that case, the eyebrows part like the character 'eight', and the eyes are like vajras."
The master said, "The mud man steps back."
[The monk] asked, "Although the bright moon is luminous, how is it when it does not hide the shadow of the lamp?"
The master said, "White snow is three feet deep; the red orb blazes across half the sky."
"Most likely one does not see the person of former times."
The master said, "High mountains cannot block it; when clouds disperse, it moves east and west on its own."
[The monk] asked, "Not avoiding danger and ruin, I ask the Master to receive me once."
The master said, "In the south there is Xuefeng; in the north there is Zhaozhou."
"In that case, I have troubled the Venerable."
The master said, "The stone bridge of Tiantai is narrow; the sitting mat of Qingliang is wide."
"What about the matter of Silla?"
The master struck him.
[The monk] asked, "Leaving behind the four propositions and cutting off the hundred negations, please, Master, speak in an alternative way."
The master said, "Six times six is thirty-six."
"In that case, the sound of the wind is roaring."
The master said, "Nine times nine is eighty-one."
The monk bowed. The master had a verse:
"The sound of the wind roars and words are clamorous;
Let me ask you worthy ones, what thing is proclaimed?
One phrase clearly understood surpasses a hundred billion;
Who would further ask about the mystery within?"
