He asked, "The plantain has no mind, yet hearing thunder it sprouts; what about an elephant's tusk producing flowers?" The Master said, "The azure sky has no obstructions; the whole body is not blind to the dynamic." "In that case, the true nature of nirvāṇa is struck by the Master; the Dragon Gate of ten thousand fathoms requires no effort." The Master said, "What about burning the tail?" "The great assembly bears witness." The Master said, "The sound of thunder is very loud, but of raindrops there is not a bit." He asked, "When Śākyamuni descended into the world, lotuses blossomed at his seven steps. Now that the Master has appeared in the world, how many petals have blossomed?" The Master said, "Clouds spread across the vast sky; rain sprinkles before the phoenix tower." "In that case, all living beings are moistened." The Master said, "For now, I take the whisk and wave it over the world; the staff temporarily serves as the respondent." He asked, "Are the Patriarch's intention and the doctrinal intention identical or different?" The Master said, "The barefoot man chases the rabbit; the boot-wearing man eats the meat." "I beg the Master for instruction." The Master said, "The boot-wearing man is full; the barefoot man is hungry."
