1.57

僧問：「如何是拄杖？」師云：「德山德山。」「過在什麼處？」師云：「薩摩訶。」問：「塵鹿成群，如何射得塵中塵？」師云：「白拂在手。」問：「香象咆哮時如何？」師云：「鼓腹宮城動。」「恁麼則一人有慶，兆民賴之。」師云：「聖君開寶殿，天花落座前。」問：「承師有言：『凡有答話，不揀高低。』學人上來，請師答話。」師良久。「恁麼則蝸牛肚下生鱗甲，烏龜背上一莖毛。」師云：「兩角撑天地，四脚海裏行，金鎗不點赤眉賊，得覩君王方顯功。」師云：「甑人携劍去，塚上草蘺蘺，風從昨夜吹銀漢，迄至如今猶未休。」師云：「去年相別後，今日再相逢。」問：「古人以棒喝接人，未審和尚如何接人？」師云：「總不用。」「恁麼則不異諸方也。」師喝便打。「也曾數處參知識，罕見如師大作家。」師云：「後犯不容。」大眾一時喫棒。師云：「因兄致此問，大眾盡霑恩。」

A monk asked, "What is the staff?"
The Master said, "Deshan, Deshan."
"Where is the fault?"
The Master said, "Svāhā!"
He asked, "When the dust-deer form herds, how can one shoot the dust within dust?"
The Master said, "The white whisk is in the hand."
He asked, "How is it when the fragrant elephant roars?"
The Master said, "Beating the belly, the palace walls shake."
"Then when one person has cause for celebration, the millions rely on him."
The Master said, "The sage lord opens the jeweled hall; heavenly flowers fall before the throne."
He asked, "I take note of the Master's words: 'Whenever there is a response, I do not choose between high and low.' The student comes forward and asks the Master to respond."
The Master remained silent for a good while.
"Then scales grow beneath the snail's belly, and a strand of hair grows on the tortoise's back."
The Master said, "Two horns prop up heaven and earth; four feet walk in the sea. The golden spear does not strike the Red Eyebrow rebels; only upon beholding the ruler is merit displayed."
The Master [further] said, "The steamer-maker carries a sword away; the grass grows thick upon the mound. The wind has blown from the Silver River since last night, and even up to now it has not ceased."
The Master [further] said, "After parting last year, today we meet again."
He asked, "The ancients used the stick and shout to receive people; I wonder how the Venerable Monk receives people?"
The Master said, "I use neither at all."
"Then you are no different from those in other places."
The Master shouted and struck him.
"I have also visited good spiritual friends in several places, but rarely have I seen a great master like you, Venerable Sir."
The Master said, "A second offense will not be tolerated."
The assembly all received the stick at once. The Master said, "Because of this brother raising this question, the entire assembly has been drenched in kindness."
