A monk asked, "What is the moon that is not in the sky?" The Master said, "Having illuminated one inquiry, [I] then shout." [The monk] asked, "What is 'long'?" The Master said, "High Heaven cannot cover it." "What is 'short'?" The Master said, "A tiny hair does not obstruct the real." "What is it like when it is neither long nor short?" The Master said, "Empty space has no obstructions; the four seas all recognize the sound." "In that case, the student has understood half of it." The Master said, "One person does not understand to put out a single hand." [The monk said,] "Although I have not yet recognized the words for the initial capacity, still there are timely words to distinguish a patched-robe monk." The Master said, "The heart does not wrong others; the face shows no color of shame." [The monk said,] "Today I personally hear the correct decree carried out; bringing it from a thousand leagues was not yet sufficient ability." The Master said, "Light lacquers the suburban altars." [The monk said,] "Heaven and earth are already established, yet humans find them hard to fathom; on this evening one must know there is adaptability." The Master said, "Constantly offer up fodder and grass; do not begrudge toil for sacrificial offerings." [The monk said,] "One must know the source-stream is distinct, flowing inexhaustibly for myriad eons." The Master said, "A single word can ruin a nation."
