A monk asked, "Cold and heat grow ever more intense; what can a poor person rely on?" The Master said, "Not wearing threadless clothes, one rejoices in laughter all day long." "In that case, then one should not be solitary and exposed." The Master said, "Deep crags cannot conceal it; the open ground does not display its form." He asked, "What is the upward road?" The Master said, "A thousand sages do not transmit it." "Why do they not transmit it?" The Master said, "They do not wish to bury it." He asked, "What is the bodhimaṇḍa?" The Master said, "You cannot set your feet down." "What is nirvāṇa?" The Master said, "You cannot lift your feet." "What is the meaning of 'you cannot lift your feet'?" The Master said, "The Thirty-three Heavens." "What is the meaning of 'you cannot set your feet down'?" The Master said, "The eighteen layers of hells." He asked, "According to the teaching, it is said: 'The mind has no hindrance.' What is being without hindrance?" The Master said, "The heavens are high and cannot be measured; the earth is thick and cannot be known." "In that case, along the roads east, west, south, and north, the student's walking place is vast." The Master said, "Try taking a single step and see." "I wonder, what about after walking?" The Master said, "In the vast sky there are no bird tracks; in the water one gropes for fish traces." He asked, "What is the single wheel of the moon?" The Master said, "It does not emerge from heaven and earth; how could it rely on the four seasons to turn?" "Why is there day and night?" The Master said, "Deluded people falsely give rise to awareness; after awakening, one immediately knows the time." He asked, "'The East Mountain and the West Ridge are green'—what is the meaning of this?" The Master said, "Across the broad earth cold and heat arise; the wind blows and the sun shines upon the rosy clouds." "In that case, then there is Zhaozhou in the south and Xuefeng in the north." The Master said, "Turned upside down!" He asked, "Śākya is stingy and Kāśyapa is rich. What is Śākya's stinginess?" The Master said, "Not a single speck can be cast away." "What is Kāśyapa's wealth?" The Master said, "Universally rescuing humans and devas." He asked, "How can one suddenly become awake and alert?" The Master said, "Step by step, without moving." "In that case, then in the cold grove not a single leaf remains; in the vast sky rosy clouds are completely absent." The Master said, "Wild geese call across the vast sky; the monastery cannot contain them." He asked, "What is realizing the intent of all Buddhas?" The Master said, "A copper head and iron forehead." "In that case, then I thank the Master for your skillful means." The Master said, "After three days, a headache." He asked, "Opening the mouth and moving the tongue are both illness; what about responding to capacity and receiving beings?" The Master gave a shout and struck him following the sound.
