Ascending the hall, [the Master] said, "Elders! An ancient said: 'When the sky is overcast, the ground of nature is dim.' Today the sky is overcast; is your nature also dim? If your nature is dim, you are driven about by it, confusing yourself for objects, utterly lacking mastery over life. Tell me, what was the original purpose of traveling on foot? It was to not be driven about by it. Therefore an ancient said: 'Spontaneously, one possesses a spirit that reaches to heaven.' Directly make it so that in all places, it serves as the principle and order, the path and road, the illumination and brightness, not turned around or exchanged by the four seasons, making heaven, earth, and the great world high or low—only then does it accord with the patch-robed monk's original family custom. Right now, is there anyone who can make use of it? If there is, step forward." / A monk asked, "Is there also a person who does not pass through heaven and earth?" / The Master said, "There is." / "I wonder, what does he accomplish?" / The Master said, "He leaps beyond the three realms, / not falling into existence or non-existence." / [A monk] asked, "What is the matter under the patch-robed monk's robe?" / The Master said, "A stark naked pauper." / [The monk] said, "I beg the Master to expediently indicate a phrase of marvelous chivalry for me to see." / The Master said, "The wooden woman threads a needle, the mountain color is lovely; / the stone man pulls the string, clouds over the ocean arise." / [A monk] asked, "When there is no obstruction before you, why can you not open your mouth?" / The Master said, "All day long there is no speech; / chattering words are ever new." / "If so, then you are already able to make the lion's roar." / The Master said, "There is no need for the jackal's yapping." / The monk then shouted. The Master said, "Just so." / The monk hesitated; the Master then shouted. The monk bowed. The Master said, "A defeated general is not beheaded." / [A monk] asked, "What is the guest within the guest?" / The Master said, "A pure person of the Way understands seeking truth." / "What is the host within the guest?" / The Master said, "He pays no heed to the ten thousand phenomena stretching horizontally and vertically." / "What is the guest within the host?" / The Master said, "Stretching his body across the ancient road, / raising his hands to hold up heaven and earth." / "What is the host within the host?" / The Master said, "Sitting and severing the crown of Vairocana, / he does not defer to Śākyamuni."
