溈山示眾云：「老僧遷化後，去山下檀越家，作一頭水牯牛，於左脇上，書一行字云：『溈山僧某甲。』若喚作溈山僧，又是水牯牛；若喚作水牯牛，又是溈山僧。當恁麼時，喚作什麼？」

Guishan instructed the assembly, saying: "After this old monk passes away, I will go down the mountain to a patron's house and become a water buffalo, with a line of words written on my left flank saying: 'Venerable So-and-so of Guishan.' If you call it a monk of Guishan, yet it is a water buffalo; if you call it a water buffalo, yet it is a monk of Guishan. At such a time, what do you call it?"
