藥山問僧：「年多少？」云：「七十二。」云：「是年七十二麼？」僧云：「是。」山便打。有僧馳此語問曹山：「此意如何？」曹山云：「前箭猶是可，後箭射人深。」僧云：「如何免棒？」曹山云：「王勅既行，諸侯避道。」

Yaoshan asked a monk, "How old are you?"
He said, "Seventy-two."
[Yaoshan] said, "Is it the age of seventy-two?"
The monk said, "Yes."
Yaoshan struck him immediately.
A monk brought these words and asked Caoshan, "What was the meaning of this?"
Caoshan said, "The first arrow was still tolerable; the second arrow shot the person deeply."
The monk asked, "How does one avoid the staff?"
Caoshan said, "When the king's decree is enacted, the feudal lords make way on the road."
