溈山與仰山摘茶次，溈云：「終日只聞子聲，不見子形。」仰山撼茶樹。溈云：「子只得其用，不得其體。」云：「某甲只恁麼，和尚作麼生？」源山良久，仰云：「和尚只得其體，不得其用。」溈云：「放子三十棒。」

While Guishan and Yangshan were picking tea, Guishan said, "All day long I have only heard your voice and not seen your form." Yangshan shook the tea tree. Guishan said, "You have only attained its function; you have not attained its substance." Yangshan said, "I am just thus; what about the Venerable Sir?" Guishan remained silent for a good while. Yangshan said, "The Venerable Sir has only attained its substance; he has not attained its function." Guishan said, "I let you off thirty blows with the staff."
