溈仰宗者。父慈子孝。上令下從。爾欲捧飯。我便與羹。爾欲渡江。我便撑船。隔山見烟。便知是火。隔牆見角。便知是牛。溈山一日普請摘茶。次謂仰山曰。終日只聞子聲不見子形。仰山撼茶樹。溈山云。子只得其用不得其體。仰曰。和尚如何。師良久。仰曰。和尚只得其體不得其用。溈山云。放子三十棒。乃至仰山過水。香嚴點茶。推木枕展坐具。插鍬立舉鍬行。大約溈仰宗風。舉緣即用忘機得體。不過此也。要見溈仰麼。月落潭無影。雲生山有衣。

As for the Guiyang lineage: the father is kind and the son is filial; the superior commands and the subordinate obeys. When you wish to serve rice, I immediately hand you soup; when you wish to cross the river, I immediately punt the boat. Seeing smoke beyond the mountain, one immediately knows there is fire; seeing horns beyond the wall, one immediately knows there is an ox. One day Guishan held a communal tea-picking. Then he said to Yangshan, "All day long I only hear your voice, but do not see your form." Yangshan shook the tea tree. Guishan said, "You only attain its function, but do not attain its essence." Yangshan said, "What about you, Venerable Monk?" The Master remained silent for a long time. Yangshan said, "The Venerable Monk only attains its essence, but does not attain its function." Guishan said, "I release you from thirty blows." Continuing down to Yangshan crossing the water, Xiangyan serving tea, pushing over the wooden pillow, spreading the sitting mat, plunging the spade and standing still, or lifting the spade and walking—in general, the style of the Guiyang lineage, bringing forth conditions as instant function, forgetting calculation and attaining essence, does not go beyond this.
