「百丈塔主見僧禮塔，云：『古人得一言半句，便休去，今時師僧，波波地有什麼了期？』洞山云：『只如塔主得多少言句？』」代云：「龍蛇易辨，衲子難瞞。」

"The pagoda master of Baizhang saw a monk paying respects to the pagoda and said, 'The ancients, having grasped a single word or half a phrase, rested completely. Today's monastic teachers run about endlessly—when will there ever be an end?' Dongshan said, 'Just how many words and phrases has the pagoda master grasped?'" Replacing [the original words], he said, "Dragons and snakes are easy to distinguish; a patch-robed monk is hard to deceive."
