「有官人看涅槃相，問僧：『是甚相？』云：『涅槃相。』『既是涅槃，為什麼却有悲有憙？』」代云：「細腰鼓子兩頭打。」

"An official looking at an image of the parinirvāṇa asked a monk: 'What image is this?' He said: 'The image of the parinirvāṇa.' 'Since it is nirvāṇa, why is there both sorrow and joy?'" Replacing [the monk's words], he said: "A narrow-waisted drum beaten at both ends."
