百丈再參馬祖，祖以手指繩床角拂子，丈云：「即此用，離此用。」祖云：「爾他後開兩片皮，將何為人？」丈取拂子竪起，祖云：「即此用，離此用。」丈掛拂子於舊處，祖便喝，丈因此大悟，直得三日耳聾。

Baizhang visited Mazu a second time. The Patriarch pointed with his finger to the whisk on the corner of the rope seat. Baizhang said: "Immediately this function, apart from this function." The Patriarch said: "In the future when you open your two lips, what will you use for people?" Baizhang took the whisk and held it upright. The Patriarch said: "Immediately this function, apart from this function." Baizhang hung the whisk in its former place. The Patriarch then shouted; Baizhang was thereby greatly awakened, and was directly deafened for three days.
