Vast and boundless is its complete body, beyond the fathom of humans and devas. Though it is free of thought and devoid of partiality, it possesses grace and wields power. Extending it, it does not stretch; contracting it, it cannot be contained. It manifests a thousand kinds of varied forms among humans and devas, transforming myriad classes, eternally suspended in the Great Ultimate. Shaking with awe-inspiring spiritual power throughout boundless kṣetras, how could it be obstructed by the stars? Transforming the multitude of beings within the realm of consciousness, how could it ever lack regulation? Not speaking of absence of merit, how could it talk of mere quietude? Arousing great compassion to eradicate suffering, it confers grace; activating great loving-kindness to bestow joy, it is devoid of [self-conscious] virtue. Now seizing, now releasing, it rests solely on meeting the moment. Now functioning, now bestowing, each serves as ornament to the other. In function, it fills the ten directions; in bestowing, it does not shift for a single instant. Releasing, it is unfettered, broad, and tolerant; seizing, it is Vimalakīrti's profound silence. Truly inconceivable, it can move and it can halt. Right before one's eyes, yet looming majestically it cannot be seen; present within a fine dust mote, yet distinct, how could it be viewed? Having activity and having capacity, it is without mind and without intention. When those of superior wisdom hear of it, their spirits are refreshed; when inferior people see it, their eyes are veiled by cataracts. Block it, and the spring is obstructed; clear it, and the water flows. Luminously clear, it requires only that the mind open, regardless of ancient or modern principles. With one unpenetrated thought, there is obstruction; in an instant the mind opens, free of hindrance. Although not a hair's breadth is gathered in, it was once of the same aspiration as the King of Emptiness. Speaking plainly, I proclaim everywhere to humans and devas: clearly, this is not it!" He also said, "Which one is it?"
