上堂，云：「橫吞巨海，倒卓須彌，衲僧面前也是尋常茶飯，行脚人須是荊棘林內坐大道場，向和泥合水處認取本來面目。且作麼生見得？」遂拈拄杖云：「直饒見得，未免山僧拄杖。」

Ascending the hall, he said: "Horizontally swallowing the great ocean, turning Mount Sumeru upside down—in the presence of a patch-robed monk, this too is ordinary tea and rice. An itinerant practitioner must sit in a great bodhimaṇḍa within the thickets of thorns, and recognize the original face where mud and water are mixed. And how do you see it?" Then he took up his staff and said: "Even granted that you see it, you cannot escape the mountain monk's staff."
