Ascending the hall, he said: "Conceiving an intent is immediately an error; moving a thought is immediately a deviation. If one neither conceives nor moves, one is no different from earth and wood. An itinerant practitioner must find the single road of turning the body." Then, taking up his fly-whisk, he said: "This is the mountain monk's fly-whisk. How do all of you turn it? If you can turn it, one becomes immeasurable, and the immeasurable becomes one. If you cannot turn it, you are an old crow in a cloth bag: though alive, as if dead."
